The Challenge: When Strategy Meets Reality

Digital transformation is more than technology. Success depends on how well strategic ambitions are translated into operational execution – and that requires above all clear communication.

Many organizations invest significantly in cloud platforms, AI systems, and agile methods. Yet sometimes the expected results don't materialize. The cause often lies not in the technology itself.

Simple and understandable communication is the key. A common language helps overcome silos, leverage synergies, and focus on actual business value.

The central question isn't "What technology do we need?" but "How do we engage in dialogue about the organization - where are we today and where do we want to go together?"

EDGY Framework: A Lean, Holistic Mental Model

The EDGY Framework1 from the Intersection Group offers a significantly leaner and more pragmatic approach to Enterprise Design. As an open-source framework, it is low-threshold and accessible to everyone.

Important: EDGY is more than just Business Architecture. It integrates three equal facets - Identity (Why do we exist?), Experience (What role do we play?), and Architecture (How do we operate?) - into a holistic mental model for Enterprise Design.

Find more information and resources at enterprise.design - the official EDGY Framework website with comprehensive learning materials, templates, and community resources.

Why EDGY is Different

Classical Frameworks:

  • Hundreds of concepts and elements
  • Focus primarily on Architecture facet
  • Complex metamodels and relationships
  • High entry barriers and certification costs
  • Focus on completeness and depth of detail
  • Often difficult to communicate to non-specialists

EDGY Framework:

  • Only 12 elements - radically simplified
  • Three equal facets - Identity, Experience, Architecture
  • Open Source - freely available without license costs
  • Low-threshold - learnable in a few hours
  • Pragmatic - focus on the essential
  • Common language - understandable for all disciplines

The Three Facets of the EDGY Framework

EDGY structures enterprises into three fundamental facets, each comprising 4 elements:

EDGY Framework The three facets of the EDGY Framework with their elements and intersections (Source: enterprise.design)

1. Identity - "Why do we exist?"

  • Purpose: The purpose and mission of the company
  • Story: The narrative representation of the company vision
  • Content: The content and messages that convey identity
  • Brand (Intersection): How we are perceived

2. Experience - "What role do we play in people's lives?"

  • Task: What people want to achieve (with our help)
  • Journey: The end-to-end experiences and interactions
  • Channel: The touchpoints and channels for interaction
  • Brand (Intersection): How identity is expressed in experiences

3. Architecture - "How do we operate?"

  • Capability: The abilities and competencies of the company
  • Process: The business processes and workflows
  • Asset: The resources, data, and technologies (software, data, infrastructure)
  • Organisation (Intersection): How we organize ourselves as teams

Intersections: Where Facets Meet

The true strength of the EDGY Framework lies in the 3 intersections between facets (see diagram above):

  • Organisation (Identity ∩ Architecture): How corporate purpose and capabilities are organizationally anchored - "How do we organize ourselves as teams?"
  • Product (Experience ∩ Architecture): How customer experiences are enabled through capabilities and processes - "What can we make and offer?"
  • Brand (Identity ∩ Experience): How corporate identity is expressed in customer experiences - "How are we perceived?"

People as Common Foundation

People form the common foundation of all three facets and are the central success factor for any transformation. They connect Identity, Experience, and Architecture and make implementation possible (see diagram above).

People perform Activities with Objects to achieve Outcomes - these 4 base elements permeate all facets.

The Architecture Facet in EDGY

EDGY elegantly integrates both core concepts of Business Architecture in the Architecture facet - one of three equal facets:

Business Capabilities:

  • What we need: people, assets, competencies
  • Hierarchically structured (Capability Map)
  • Stable and long-term

Business Processes:

  • How value creation occurs: activities, workflows
  • Hierarchically structured (Process Landscape)
  • Dynamic and optimizable

Assets:

  • Concrete resources: software, data, infrastructure
  • Support capabilities and processes

These three elements (Capability, Process, Asset) together form the Architecture facet and are directly compatible with classical Business Architecture concepts.

Reframing: The EDGY Approach to Transformations

EDGY promotes reframing - reinterpreting challenges across all facets:

EDGY Reframing EDGY Reframing: From isolated view to holistic perspective (Source: enterprise.design)

Example: "Reduce costs in economic crisis"

Classical approach (Organisation):

  • Where can we reduce personnel?

EDGY Reframing (all facets):

  • Organisation: Where can we reduce personnel?
  • Architecture: How can we make processes more efficient?
  • Identity: How do we maintain a healthy culture during transition?
  • Product: Which products should we abandon?
  • Experience: How do we minimize negative impacts on customer experiences?
  • Brand: What can we do to maintain a strong brand?

Through this holistic reframing, hidden dependencies and opportunities become visible that would be overlooked in isolated consideration.

Advantages of EDGY Over Classical Frameworks

1. Low Threshold:

  • Learnable in a few hours instead of months of training
  • No expensive certifications required
  • Immediately usable in workshops and projects

2. Pragmatism:

  • Focus on essentials instead of completeness
  • 12 elements instead of hundreds of concepts
  • Quick results instead of lengthy modeling

3. Open Source:

  • Freely available to everyone
  • Community-driven and continuously developed
  • No vendor lock-ins or license costs

4. Common Language:

  • Understandable for designers, strategists, employees, and managers
  • Bridges silos between disciplines
  • Promotes co-design and collaboration

5. Holistic:

  • Integrates Identity, Experience, and Architecture
  • Shows intersections and dependencies
  • Enables reframing of challenges

When EDGY, When Classical Frameworks?

EDGY is particularly suitable for:

  • Fast transformation projects
  • Cross-functional teams without specialized background
  • Startups and medium-sized companies
  • Strategic discussions and workshops
  • Initial concept development
  • Organizations seeking a common language across all disciplines

EDGY in Practice: Restaurant Analogy

To make EDGY concepts tangible, let's consider a restaurant as an example:

Restaurant Business Architecture EDGY in practice: Restaurant as example for holistic Enterprise Design (Photo: Unsplash)

Identity Facet:

  • Purpose: "We bring people together through authentic Italian cuisine"
  • Story: "Family recipes from Tuscany since 1950"
  • Content: Menu cards, social media posts, website content

Experience Facet:

  • Task: "Enjoy a special dinner with friends"
  • Journey: Reservation → Welcome → Order → Meal → Payment → Farewell
  • Channel: Phone, website, restaurant, social media

Architecture Facet:

  • Capability: Restaurant service execution, food creation, supply chain management
  • Process: Welcome guests, take orders, prepare dishes, create bill
  • Asset: Kitchen, convection oven, POS system, reservation software, service staff

Intersections:

  • Organisation: How teams are organized (kitchen, service, management)
  • Product: What is offered (menus, catering, events)
  • Brand: How perceived (authentic, family-oriented, high-quality)

Practical Example: My Investment Strategy with the Stock Manager

My personal investment strategy as an EDGY example:

Investment Strategy Architecture EDGY in finance: Systematic investment strategy as Enterprise Design (Photo: Unsplash)

Identity Facet:

  • Purpose: Financial independence in retirement through data-driven investments
  • Story: From passive index fund investor to active, systematic stock picker
  • Content: Investment criteria, screening rules, performance reports

Experience Facet:

  • Task: "Continuously optimize portfolio and beat MSCI World"
  • Journey: Screening → Analysis → Purchase decision → Monitoring → Sale
  • Channel: Broker platform, financial data APIs, portfolio dashboard

Architecture Facet:

  • Capability: Fundamental analysis, risk management, performance analysis, market context analysis
  • Process: Perform company value rating, watchlist scoring, portfolio review, risk assessment
  • Asset: Rating logic system, financial database, broker platform, screening tools

Intersections:

  • Organisation: Me in different roles (analyst, risk manager, portfolio manager, trader)
  • Product: Investment products (stock portfolio, watchlist scores, performance reports)
  • Brand: How I'm perceived as investor (systematic, data-driven, disciplined)

Reframing Example: "Improve Returns"

Instead of focusing only on Architecture (better screening criteria), I consider all facets:

  • Identity: Does my strategy still align with my purpose?
  • Experience: Which tasks are most time-consuming? Where can I automate?
  • Architecture: Which capabilities am I missing? Which processes are inefficient?
  • Organisation: How can I better allocate my time between roles?
  • Product: Which products (watchlist categories) perform best?
  • Brand: How do I stay disciplined and avoid emotional decisions?

Through this holistic reframing, I recognize that not only better screening criteria (Architecture), but also automation (Experience), time management (Organisation), and discipline (Brand/Identity) are crucial for better returns.
